The Beach
We stepped out of the forest—and clouds of mosquitoes—into the bright coastal midafternoon light. Gusts of wind sent individual grains of sand tumbling down the beach under the flat white illumination of the sun. The surf was small, but windblown and frothy as it neared the shoreline, each wave breaking on the back of the one preceding it, the cacophony of their sound almost drowned out by the gusts ripping by us. In the distance, a spit of land, muted by salt-spray filled air, jutted out into the sea, the low sand dunes atop it framing the water next to us like a bay that it actually wasn’t. Atop the dunes, small strands of grass clung to the sand, their shallow roots burrowing down in search of water and stability.
Enjoying the lack of bugs almost as much as the view, we stood on the sand and watched the world pass by.
