The Waiting
The east-bound California Zephyr, one of Amtrak's four long-distance East-West trains, charges out of the jagged peaks of the Rockies and then hurls itself across the plains and high deserts of Utah and Nevada. Not all the rail traffic in the area moves with such gusto though. This short string of freight rail cars looked like it hadn't been rolling anywhere in a long time.
Taking a picture from a moving train can be difficult. The ride is far from smooth. The glass of the window is streaked, tinted, and often dirty. Your view is fixed to the sideways vantage of the train car’s orientation, objects of interest are gone almost before you see them, and the light outside is constantly changing direction and intensity. Sometimes you get lucky though.
