Fall Train

Mount Washington is the highest point in New England, thrusting skyward from amidst the Presidential Range in New Hampshire. Despite its imposing bulk and harsh weather (it holds the record for the highest recorded windspeed—a stunning 231mph), as far as mountains go, it’s a rather civilized journey to get to its top. There is an auto road that winds its way to the summit, and then there is the cog rail, which tracks straight up a spur ridge towards the peak, reaching over 37 percent of grade as it climbs.

Most of the trains on the line have long since switched over from the steam of the railways 1860s’ origins to modern diesel; however a few steam trains still run each day. You hear these beasts long before you see them emerging out of a cloud of steam and smoke (and at the right time of year mist too) like a mythological creature from times past posing for a picture. Of course, it helps too when there is amazing foliage on the trees!
