I never had any specific reason to go to Hingham (although one time I stopped at the Verizon store there to get a charger for my phone, and another time I stopped in PetSmart to see what animals they had). I’d routinely take students there, following the straight lines of Interstate 10 across the Sonoran Desert until the craggy summit of Wasson Peak would come into view, marking the beginning of the end of the flight.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003eDespite those semi-frequent visits, I never spent any time on the ground beyond the airport’s perimeter fence until years later when I needed ankle surgery and a doctor in the area was recommended. A pre-surgical consult in January gave me an extra day, and to escape the almost 80 degree winter afternoon, I headed north in my rental car, up the mountain and into a below zero winter wonderland that kept me shivering in my car despite the heat set so high.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003eA few months later I returned with my wife for the actual surgery. Gusts of wind sent individual grains of sand tumbling down the beach under the flat white illumination of the sun. The surf was small, but windblown and frothy as it neared the shoreline, each wave breaking on the back of the one preceding it, the cacophony of their sound almost drowned out by the gusts ripping by us. In the distance, a spit of land, muted by salt-spray filled air, jutted out into the sea, the low sand dunes atop it framing the water next to us like a bay that it actually wasn’t. The river itself never quite makes it there, instead running into the Plum Island Sound, just short of the open ocean. Standing in its path, which runs from the mouth of Newburyport Harbor at the north to the aptly named Sandy Point at the south, are the boggy marshes and beaches of Plum Island.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003eThe Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, located at the island’s midpoint, contains a series of boardwalked trails that cut through the marshland and forest. Scenic overlooks abound, providing plenty of opportunities to stop and watch the various birds and animals that inhabit the refuge.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003eOn a long layover in Boston, in the middle of the summer, I caught the Rockport Commuter train northward, out of the sweltering city. I had spent the day working my way east along the old highway, the noise from a distant Interstate 84 nothing more than a faint drone. I stopped at several of the waterfalls, taking pictures of the sunlit spray and the fall leaves. After one particularly scenic interlude, I headed back to my rental car, crossing over the stream on a slightly dilapidated bridge.
